Absence

Mike Dickson

Was I ever here? Really? Did you see me? Or did you think you saw me? Did you stand beside my grave and weep for what I used to be? Show me how you know where I was. And when I was. And that I am not just a comfortable memory planted inside your head to make you think I was still there beside you?

Even when we were together, how did you know I was really there with you in body and not just because you wanted me to be there? Was I with you? Was I there? Was I ever there?

Now you look down on the ashes and see what you want to see of me. That grey dust is no more me than any past memory of me was ever what I was. We are all without form and without shape, concealing ourselves within the mind that wants to pin us down and not as reality dictates. I am no here. I am not there. I was never really anywhere. And at the same time I could be everywhere.

Presence and absence. Neither make sense. Neither have any true meaning because we can think what we want to think and and believe what we need to believe. Do not stand and grieve for me. I am not here. I never was.
