Nocturnes VII

Mike Dickson

You really cannot afford to let your guard down - not even for a second - or they will be onto you. They are lying in wait, always, so you can never be complacent. They are not your friend, no matter what they might tell you, or what is said to you about them. Learn to fear them, even if you are not afraid.

The time ticks on by. The clock face stares down, in a brittle and ominous silence, as though it's marking out the hour of your judgement, or the minute that the mask will slip and you will be forever exposed to them.

Far off sounds come to you. Sounds of discomfort and a deep sense of unease that feels like a familiar place which has just become completely unfamiliar, as though turned through a few degrees away from the light of the distant, wayward moon.

The time moves forward. They don't move at all. You cannot see them but you know they are there. Out there, in the blackness, hiding between the gaps in the darkness where the shadows fall at their thickest.
