Nocturnes VIII

Mike Dickson

So once it looked down on me from afar. It was dark and threatening. Ominous. A symbol of dark industry and collapsed empire. Windows without glass. Sockets without eyes. Hollow skulls for hollow men.

Then it fell. But it was saved in time. Just in time. I could see into it. Into the viscera and ragged entrails within. Its gross interior now visible. And it became somehow worse, even in this condition.

Then they recovered it. And built it back slowly. They made it gleam again. Healed. Restored. The same, but different. Still fearful.

And now I sit within it. A part of it. I am part of the frightening whole. Inside the creature, the source of my greatest and most lasting unease. I quell fear by inhabiting it.
